DIRECTIONS

 

By Car - Follow Brown Tourist Signs from centre of Poynton, up Park Lane, onto Middlewood Road and then right onto Anson Road.  The museum is on your left about half way up Anson Road.

By Bus - take the P1 to the Boars Head, Higher Poynton, short walk down Anson Road to Museum entrance.   Timetable here  This bus goes from Middlewood station to Poynton station.

Within Walking Distance

 

Within 5 minutes walk from the museum is the The Middlewood Way.  It offers a 10-mile (16-km) traffic-free route for walkers, cyclists and horseriders. It follows the line of the former Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway through picturesque Cheshire countryside and between historic mill towns. For much of its length, the Middlewood Way runs close to the Macclesfield Canal, and there are many options for easy circular walks. For the more adventurous, the extensive public footpath network reaches into the Peak District Foothills to the east and the Cheshire Plain to the west.  For a great walk around the area looking at the history of the collieries around Poynton click here.

 

The Macclesfield Canal is part of the famous Cheshire Ring.  The Cheshire Ring is composed of the Macclesfield Canal and parts of the Peak Forest, Ashton, Rochdale, Bridgewater and Trent & Mersey canals.   Enjoy a relaxing walk along the tow path or visit one of the many excellent pubs along the canalside for lunch.  The Trading Post, within a few minutes walk from the museum, has a day boat hire service to allow you to enjoy the canal from the deck of your own narrow boat. 

 

The Boars Head at Shrigley Road North, is only a few minutes walk from the museum.  This handsome redbrick public house dates back about 120 years and was used as a hostelry for workmen constructing the nearby railway. Gordon is the chef, and dishes from his printed menu and daily specials are available every lunchtime and evening. Lighter bites include plain or toasted sandwiches, baguettes with a variety of tasty fillings and an excellent Welsh rarebit served with a crisp green salad. Main meals comprise pub classics such a scampi, breaded plaice, prime gammon steaks, chilli con carne and home-made pies.

Travel by Road

Travel by Rail and Coach

High speed rail services are available to Crewe, Chester and Warrington from London's Euston and Paddington Stations (2.5 hours), and from Glasgow on the West Coast main line.
